What I Did: My wife’s birthday falls on Bonfire Night, and as such she asked me to make her a ‘Gunpowder Plot’ cake. The way I saw it, two things were needed to make this project a success - the Houses of Parliament in cake form and a few pyrotechnics. The indoor fireworks would be easy to source, but the cake would surely be a taller order.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, a search of Pinterest yielded few results for ‘Houses of Parliament Cake’, so I took inspiration from the only appropriate post I could find. It looked pretty complicated, but I’d made a sponge cake at school some 20 years ago so I wasn’t a complete novice. I made a few cosmetic tweaks to the original design in an attempt to make the build a little easier (If you look very closely, you may be able to spot a few subtle differences in the chocolate finger roof, the silver ball windows and the spire of Big Ben, or the ‘sweaty witches hat’ as my wife rather callously referred to it), none of which added anything positive to the overall appearance of the cake.
Some 30 seconds after I took this photo, the tower collapsed in a heap, reducing my monstrous creation to a pile of spongey marzipan rubble. It was probably the best thing that could ever have happened to it.

You were excellent with your creation! And sponge cake and marzipan sound delicious. I was at an Independence Day outdoor party some years ago. The cake was shaped like an American flag with a beautiful fireworks display on top.. And one of the guests really was experienced in professional pyrotechnics. The cake went off as planned, but red, white, and blue frosting makes lavender frosting, and it was everywhere!!! Sure glad it was an outdoors party.

How is this a fail? It might not look exactly like the original but I think it looks awesome for someone who “made a sponge cake at school some 20 years ago so I wasn’t a complete novice.”
I go all out for my kids’ birthday cakes since I don’t think its worth the effort to decorate a house for a day (for a toddler) and I could NEVER pull this one off!

Oh my God I Love it! It’s so cute and cartoony. Deffs not a fail.
I am ‘the wife’ and recipient of this cake. It’s still the best cake I’ve ever had, Will did an insanely good job! We make cakes for each other every birthday, it has to be exactly designed to the brief given by the recipient. It’s great fun and the results are always hilarious (although they didn’t seem to be improving year on year!).
