What I Did: We had all the ingredients and decided we wanted to make cookies. I’m not sure at what point this went wrong, if it was the batter or the lack of rolling pin or if it was just destined to fail from the start.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I would try this with store bought dough, though I do not feel we will try this again.

When done correctly, this recipe is really easy. It is important to roll out the dough to very even thickness (so yes, a rolling pin is ESSENTIAL to make this), and to have the dough well chilled before rolling, and then chill again before slicing.

No rolling pin, dear? How on earth would you think you could do this without a rolling pin? Looks pretty simple other than that…

Your dough may possibly be too wet, as well as too warm. The majority of the baking fails here are likely due to the same cause. Get a digital kitchen scale and measure your flour, sugar, and fats (butter/margarine) by weight in grams. There can be as much as a 30% variance in the amount of flour in a cup depending on how you fill said cup. (sugar doesn’t compress) Baking is all about ratios and methods. For example, a good, if slightly dry sugar cookie, is 1 part sugar to 2 parts fat to 3 parts flour. (see also “Ratio” by Michael Ruhlman)

It amazes me how a person will attempt a recipe with either missing ingredients, tools or techniques and complain the pin was a ‘fail’. Common sense is certainly lacking.

  5. Rachel

I don’t see where she claimed that the pin was a fail. The way I see it is that she just submitted her failed attempt. Goodness… this page used to be so much fun. Some people have become quite snarky.

When did it become ok to be so rude about peoples’ efforts?
The poster never complained about this being a fail, she just submitted her effort. I didn’t think this site was a place to bitch at people, more a place to share our efforts in a good humoured way.
Maybe the editor should start a new site called ‘Pinterest bitch’ or similar, for people with no manners.

Wow lol. So I began noticing traffic coming from this site and had to check out what this fail was. As the original poster of the swirled sugar cookie tutorial, I can say, they are indeed quite simple to put together if the instructions are followed and you have the necessary tools (rolling pin). Chilling the dough is also KEY. I’m not really sure I can figure out what the poster was doing in this photos except that the dough looks too soft…and I’m not sure why there is flour there when they were trying to add the sprinkles… but I do hope they will give it another attempt, following the instructions properly, to see just how easy (and yummy) they are.

    Good luck!

Chilling the dough is a huge factor in success and who doesn’t have a rolling pin? I mean if you bake at all, isn’t that an essential?

    Snarky comments? Really?
Personally, they are uncalled for in this instance. Seems like there are too many people needing to prop up their egos by giving someone else the business.

Shame. I thought it was quite nice of her to leave her efforts here. It takes practice to do so many of these projects. That is what life is all about, practice and learning from our mistakes, sharing with each other our mistakes so others learn what they could be doing wrong.

Being gracious and thoughtful to others isn’t that hard to do…..
Hope all of you have a quality day.

Some of us are not good at baking. But those cookies are soooo cute that everyone want to try. So, stop beeing so horrible.

It looks like a lot of flour was used in the rolling process, which may have made the surfaces of the dough a bit to dry to properly stick together when rolling the combined doughs into the swirl… The idea of the pin is really adorable though.. Maybe I’ll try it myself sometime…
