Objective: Alleged “”$6 20-minute tank dresses!”” from Pinterest. We chose this project because of the supposed ease and inexpense. HA!
Actuality: $20+ 4-hour-debacle disasters
My Result:
What Would You Do Differently? Maybe we should be skinnier, or perhaps be infants. This dress would only be flattering on a waif or a small child.
I wish I had seen this yesterday. Made it today. It looks exactly like yours. Frumpiest. Dress. Ever.
Bring it up higher on the waist perhaps? Also, the fabric pattern + material is not flattering made in this type of style.
No offense ladies but these were so ugly to begin with…what attracted you to this? You are so much prettier than these dresses. The original inspiration was ugly and super unflattering. Unless you were putting on a backyard production of Little House on the Prairie..
Well, I, too made this dress…and failed. It was too frumpy, and they didnt tell you in the directions to sew the seam up the back of the skirt twice (something a novice sewer would not know) so my seam ripped and shredded. Money wasted. I tossed it in the trash.
I have made this dress a bunch of times for my 4 yr old girls and even one for me…turned out great everytime…maybe bring the waist up to right under the bust, empire waist is more flattering…and I am a size 16, not a waif by any means.
I made a similar dress (I use a single layer of fabric, & hem it, rather than do it “bubble” style) & it’s turned out wonderfully! It has to be an empire waist to truly look nice. I have two other tank tops that I plan on using to make a couple more!
I actually make a ton of these and love them but I definitely do it a bit differently, single later of fabric (instead of bubble), and instead of attaching the shirt/skirt at the waist I do it right under the bust… super nice for a summer dress! I Highly recommend trying it again! adding elastic to the back half of the “waist/bust” is awesome especially for a bustier lady!
The gal in the middle, with blue on top and green on the bottom, looks fine for a casual dress. Especially in the other pictures from the blog.
Personally, I can’t wear a two-toned empire waist dress. It makes me look like I’ve got great-granny levels of saginess and like I’ve stuffed my bra with water balloons. And very very pregnant, like “ma’am do you need us to call an ambulance for you?” pregnant. You’ll note that the gal with the highest waistline, white top, blue skirt, is the one who looked pregnant. (FTR, pregnancy is a wonderful look for women who *are* pregnant. Rock the baby bumps!)
There’s also a fourth women not pictured here who looks fine until she puts on a sash and creates the “breasts hanging over a stomach” look that is what I hate about empire waists. She’s in teal and large flowers.
I don’t think the salmon and grey is as bad with the sash as the other dress, but I’ll like to see a better picture of it.
But the thing that really stands out about this is that they ALL look tons better when they’re standing with better posture.
