I don’t think the cooking time had anything to do with the “fail”. But this candy/bar is so good you should try it again. One time mine failed, but it was because I used sugar beet brown sugar and not cane brown sugar.

Google Carnation Sweetened Condensed Milk Recipes and find “Easy Toffee Candy”. This is truly Christmas Crack which my family talks about all year long. (I only make one pan a year, and we devour it embarrassingly fast.)

These are the modifications I make to the Carnation recipe:
    …..I do not use foil.
…..I use Keebler Club crackers instead of plain old saltines. (I think this is why it turns out exceptionally good.)
…..When the toffee comes out of the oven, DO cool the 1 minute before putting the chocolate chips on and DO wait the 5 minutes before spreading. (Sometimes I get impatient.)
    Good luck and Enjoy!

This recipe is touchy. One of my sisters gave it to me, and after my third failure, she admitted it worked for her only half the time. Humidity and temperature in the house make a huge difference.
