Fail: Caramel Apple Bites

Name: Samantha

Original Inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/361976888769487584/

What I Did: I wanted to make these fabulously yummy looking caramel apples bites for a going away lunch for a coworker.

The original pin’s reviews mentioned difficulty getting the caramel to stick to the apple skin, and recommended washing and scrubbing the peels to get the waxy coating off. I thought I would be smart and just peel them all. The caramel would definitely be more likely to stick to the apple itself, right? Wrong!!

I tried everything but the caramel kept sliding off the apples. Finally I just threw the tub of apples into the fridge, hoping the caramel would stiffen before it was completely ruined. But when I woke up the next morning, the caramel had ALL slid off and I guess the moisture from the apples combined with the caramel to create some sort of soupy caramel apple juice! Ewwwww.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I won’t try this project again. I tried it with the caramel warmer, the caramel cooler. I tried dipping the apples, swirling the apples, pouring the caramel over stationary apples, etc.

I had a similar fail two weeks ago. I was making caramel apple wedding favors and read about a bunch of people having problems getting the caramel to stick….I found a pin that recommended lightly sanding the apples. I had sanded 10 or 11 when I noticed the skin *weeping*

I decided to use another idea suggested on a different pin. This pin suggested to get a pot of boiling water and boil the apples one at a time for 10 seconds and dry them vigorously with a towel to remove the wax.

After preparing all the apples I finally got them all coated with caramel. By the time we woke up the next day the lightly sanded apples had NO caramel on them at all. It had all slid off. The lightly BOILED apples were PERFECT and the caramel was still in place 4 days later when they were given as wedding favors. The apples were still crisp and yummy 6 days later when I finally was able to eat one on our honeymoon!

the skin has to be left on the apple for the caramel (or candy) coating to stick. wash the apples and rub the outside or the boiling trick mentioned above works great. my summer job during h.s. was working in a food booth at the fair making caramel and candy apples. 🙂

Lol I did the same thing, but used a melon baller. Same exact thing happened to me!
