What I Did: It was becoming close to the 4th & we wanted some cute shorts without paying the price. we followed the directions and this is what we got. we spent hours laughing at the result.

I don’t understand the fail. The only thing I can see is that you applied the paint really heavily… If I saw you in person that is what I would have thought you would have wanted. I wouldn’t give it a second thought. Congratulations on your win, and not fail
Wash them a couple of times. Will probably turn out the way you want.

You might try gently going over the surface with sandpaper? It really does look good apart from the paint being more opaque than you probably wanted.
It would probably be easier to get the effect you want using really pale blue jeans, like the OP did. A thinner layer of paint would show up better on a light background.
This is a fail because you were trying to be patriotic, but it’s actually a violation of the Flag Code to wear the flag on your body like this.
The fade will come naturally, don’t worry.
