What I Did: Here was my Pinterest efforts of trying to make Christmas eggs with candy in them. And to think I thought I’d be able to make twenty of them. I even followed the instructions to the tee. Woke up this morning to this blob of something.
My Result:
We did this last week. Partial success, 6 came out great, 4 failed miserably. Those that did work look really good but wouldn’t bother again, messy, messy, messy!
Just use straight Elmer’s glue without diluting it and put Vaseline on the balloon before you apply the yarn to it. Let dry for about 2 days and they come out perfect every time. I’ve even made yarn lanterns for parties this way.
You need to use a cotton thread or perle cotton. The acrylic yarn is just the wrong texture and absorbency.
I’ve always had good luck with liquid starch.
Followed instructions to a T? I’m pretty sure you used different string! Try again with string they used.
i think this goes to show that people should find the original source of things before trying them. the original doesn’t use glue, they use a sugar mixture to get it stiff. They also did use different thread. http://www.instructables.com/id/String-Easter-Eggs/
I was just going to suggest the sugar method. That’s what we did growing up making large ones that we were even able to cut out an opening in. My mom would then glue ribbon around the opening (hiding the cut pieces) and fill it with fake grass and candy for gifts.

I figured out how to make these successfully and also posted my own failures. Like other’s I won’t be making these again.

I made these with Baker’s Twine and they turned out fantastic. But, they didn’t hold there shape for long. After about a week, they started to collapse. I will definitely make again with glue. They look really cute with multicolored baker’s twine!
I tried these for Easter, used the correct thread, used it with Sta Flo starch as the one I saw said to use. Epic Fail!
