What I Did: I put about a dozen marshmallows on a foil pan. I preheated the broiler oven and cooked them for exactly 2 minutes. When I opened the oven, every single one was on fire! The flames were three inches tall. After screaming for my mom (she didn’t hear me), I took matters into my own hands. I threw a cup of ice water on them and jumped back. They hissed and smoked, but the fire went out. I’m 24 and cook all the time, but this was a disaster.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: put them in for 10 seconds at most, or never try this again. I don’t want my house to catch on fire.

Uhh, the original post says the marshmellows will toast in less than 30 seconds!! Did you even read that? When you’re broiling anything, let alone marshmellows, you should leave the oven door cracked and keep a very close eye on the browning. And throwing ice water in the oven? Terrible idea.
Aside from that, because you used a super light disposable foil pan, it probably contributed to your flame up because it can’t absorb any heat like a heavy sheet pan (which is what is used in the original post) would.

I’m assuming broiler means grill in other parts of the world.

    1. you should never use the grill with the door closed
    2. you should never leave it unattended when you’re cooking something under it
    3. it says sheet pan, which i assume is something like a baking tray, far sturdier than the BBQ tray used
    4. the end of instruction 1 “This goes quickly, in a matter of about 30 seconds, so watch them carefully.”

Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if you did set your house on fire at some point.

Ah. I’m all for a pin fail, because we all do it but I just can’t get into the ones where people say “I don’t know what happened!” And then clearly ignored the directions.

Well…. yes… I’m sure there are lots of things you shouldn’t have done and did wrong and what not… but it DOES make for a good anekdote, :-).

(And would very likely be something that would happen to me, lol)

    So long,

Don’t even use the oven! What I do is drop the marshmallows on whatever the drink or snack is, then use a stick lighter and just carefully hold the flame over the marshmallows (not touching) until they’re crisp and golden. You need a steady hand, but it’s still much safer. At least nobody got hurt!
