What I Did: It all went wrong when I didn’t let the puff pasty thaw out long enough. So I put it in the microwave - some parts were too thawed. Then I didn’t have that roller pin thing, so I just used a large cup to try to roll out the pasty. My pastry was too thick. Second big problem: My apple slices wouldn’t roll. They kept cracking when I tried to roll them. So then I abandoned the idea of the roses and decided to make “apple bites” and just put in the strips of dough with apples. Surprise: Puff pastry actually puffs up! The pastry came off the apples as it baked. It was terrible. It did taste good, and it probably would have been just fine if I’d just thrown some ice cream on top. But seeing as I was going to take this to a potluck at church and there would be no place for ice cream - um…no.
My Result:
Next Time I Will: 1) Thaw out the puff pastry; 2) Get a rolling pin; 3) Use a mandoline to cut the apple slices super-thin. I think if I do all that, I might be all right. If all else fails, have ice cream ready.
