What I Did: I found this recipe and instantly pinned it for later because my husband is obsessed with all things Funfetti. So when he surprised me with a brand new KitchenAid mixer I figured I’d repay him by making these cookies for him. I followed the directions to a T, and was expecting some picturesque, blog-worthy cookies to come out of the oven. What I got instead were these cookies that look like they barfed everywhere.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I have no idea what went wrong, just don’t use this recipe.

Oh my goodness! Sorry to hear about this fail, Danielle! I’m actually the blog author and have made this recipe many times without those results. I have some tips on where things might have gone wrong to help anyone else who may want to try this recipe:

DO NOT overfill the cookie dough with Funfetti (and that looks like what may have gone wrong here). The funfetti filling should be completely encased in cookie dough, even when you press down to slightly flatten the cookies (when/after they bake, some of the funfetti WILL peek through, as shown, but it should NOT be showing when they go into the oven)

DO NOT place cookie dough on a warm cookie sheet. Cookie sheets need to come back down to room temperature after baking a batch of cookies, you should keep your cookie dough balls cold in the freezer while they are waiting and never place them on a hot pan or they could melt all over the place.

Always make sure your oven is calibrated to the right temperature, if it’s too low your cookies could spread way too much.

I also do not recommend using margarine in place of butter, I don’t know if that was the case here but I find that margarine causes cookies to spread too much.

I sincerely hope these tips help, and I’m so sorry you experienced this fail!

I suspect that the cookies were too soft. When they spread like that, it’s usually due to the shortening. Next time, put the dough in the fridge for half an hour or so before baking.
