What I Did: I’ve been eying these cookies for months. I was going to make them for my students’ graduation tomorrow. Some recipes suggested using Kool-Aid for extra brightness and so as not to water down the dough with food coloring. The dough was bright, but almost unbearably sour. Also, the dough was impossible to roll out. ALSO, once layers were on top of each other and rolled into a tube, the dough squished as it was cut and wouldn’t remain round, and it got crumbly.
My Result:
Next Time I Will: not use Kool-Aid. Ever eat Airheads? The cookies tasted like that, but not good.
I will chill the dough and perhaps even use a bit more flour to make the dough stand up better to cutting. I won’t roll the dough out so thin.

Call them Modern Art cookies!
Oh gosh, whoever said Kool Aid is a jerk! That stuff is like pure citric acid powder! Powdered/gelled food colours exist for exactly this purpose! Also helps to chill the dough overnight and then slice with a hot, sharp knife. 🙂 Hopefully you get a chance to make them again!
I made this recipe and while making it, I started to think that this pin was a lie. The cookies in the photo did not look cooked. My recipe had sprinkles on the outside.
However I continued and to my big surprise, the cookies came out looking pretty perfect except my sprinkles had melted and made the sides look a little weird. It took me over 4 hours to make these. The bottoms ended up being really dark. The cookies tasted horrible.
What these recipes fail to tell you is that you’ll only end up with 5 or so cookies that look good from the inside of the loaf, the other 12 cookies are over varying size and spiral.
I was so disappointed with this recipe.
TL;DR. It took forever, made a huge mess, I only ended up with 5 good looking cookies, tasted terrible.
I’ve made these cookies several times with no issue: http://imgur.com/a/Uo8lH#0 . The first time I followed the recipe on the pin. After that, I started using my fallback rolled sugar cookie recipe (Martha Stewart Cookie Book) and had great results. Gel food coloring is awesome.
