What I Did: There is a weight watchers video going around Facebook that makes these look insanely simple so I went to pinterest for the recipe. In theory these are simple but in reality the caramel completely fell off my apples and turned into this. I was so disappointed because this was the planned dessert for a dinner party so I had to quickly move onto plan b!

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I honestly have no idea, I posted to FB and a few friends said they had the same experiences. I guess I have no idea how to get the caramel to stick to the apple.

I think you should have boiled the caramel to the hard stage, 290 degrees with your candy thermometer, so it would harden sooner and not get diluted by the dehydrating apple. You could also cool the apples before coating and dip quickly.

All the caramel apples I’ve ever seen were whole, not peeled.

Maybe lightly dust them with corn starch before dipping as well?

Like ormond otvos said, boil it longer. If you dont have a candy thermomether, use a teaspoon to drop caramel into a cup of water. If it hardens, it’s ready.

Mini caramel apples have now edged out dried strawberries as the most common fail on Pinterest Fail.

I’ve made these, but use butterscotch chips instead of caramel! Works much better!

I made these and they were great. BUT I patted the “Apple balls” (sounds weird) dry with a paper towel just prior to dipping. They were way too wet for the caramel to stick.

    Guess what!?!?!?
It’s impossible to get caramel to stick to PEELED apples (for long).
The apple flesh will sweat apple juice and the caramel with slough off into sticky goo.
If the caramel is too hot when you apply it it will partly cook the flesh making a yuckier mess.

A friend of mine did this and the way she got the caramel to stick was she added a little heavy cream to the caramel. It did the trick because it stayed on, she also used green grapes instead of apples once. It was delicious and tasted just like caramel apples.

It might be because your caramel is too hot. in order for caramel to stick, it needs to cool enough to begin to solidify. The majority of the time caramel apples fail, it’s due to the improper temperature of the caramel
