What I Did: I was supposed to roll out 2 separate batches of sugar cookie dough (one white and one another color), then lay one on top of the other, roll them up like a log, cover in sprinkles, and refrigerate for a few hours before slicing and baking. As soon as I rolled it up, the so called “log” started to flatten like a pancake and didn’t hold its log shape AT ALL! I couldn’t even wrap it in plastic wrap and get it into the fridge to solidify. I ended up slicing it as it was, rolling it up in balls, and making regular ol’ sugar cookies. Epic fail.
My Result:
Next Time I Will: change nothing because I will not be attempting this one again!
Hmmm… Did you chill the dough before rolling it out? Seems like it might have been too warm and couldn’t hold its shape because of that. I’m sure they still tasted good lol!
You are supposed to refrigerate the dough before you roll it into a log (which the blog post specifies). I make a similar recipe for pinwheel cookies and I refrigerate the dough at multiple steps - before you roll it out, after you roll it out, and after you form the log. They are a bit time consuming, but are pretty impressive if you follow all of the steps.
Definitely this.
I can pull off Unicorn Poop cookies but it’s an all day process due to the repeat chilling necessary. If you are pressed for time or simply not patient, pinwheel and other swirled sugar cookies probably aren’t your thing.
Those still look amazing! That is a beautiful new thing you have invented.
