What I Did: Pie can be messy, but mini pies? AWESOME for kids or to bring to a friend’s house for dinner. This recipe seemed simple, fill dough and cook. I used blueberries instead of cherries. But it’s not as easy as it looks to make those pretty crimps in the dough and the filling spilled out into the muffin tins and created a sticky mess. The recipe said NOT to grease the muffin tins - MISTAKE. They tasted good though!
My Result:
Next Time I Will: My second batch was a bit better. I used a bigger circle of dough and greased the tins. Still didn’t look as pretty as the picture, but at least they came out in one piece.

I just found your site and have been going through your wins and fails. I’ve made something similar to these. Minus the crimping. It also helps add a cobbler topping. It helps with the bubbling over. Strawberry or apple pie filling is yummy too. Dice the strawberries and apples into small pieces. Sprinkle some sugar to help it juice, and then spoon them to the mini pies.
besides the possible fixes to the filling, to make it just look better, practice crimping and use an EGG WASH. this is what gives pie crust that shine when it comes out of the oven, rather than having a dull pasty brown look
It would work much better with a different dough… the dough on the original picture seems to have the texture of what is called here “Blaetterteig”. Google says the english term ist “puff pastry”, I hope that’s right 😀 With Blätterteig, it probably will leave the tins.
I’m also thinking the pastry in the original picture looks like it might have been deep fried rather than baked, and then just filled with fruit. It looks an awful lot like the outside of a fried wonton wrapper, like you would find on a crab rangoon.
The original was assembled for photography, not baked as a pie. They baked the shells separate then spooned in the canned pie filling. It looks good, and that’s all they care about.
