What I Did: I wanted to test my skills in the kitchen and the directions appeared simple enough. I wouldn’t really change anything from the inspiration.

Maybe I’m not seeing the fail here? You have a 2 made out of sprinkles like the pic, just no sprinkles on the sides. But the links you provided for inspiration show polka dot cakes, not cakes with sprinkles, this is a bit confusing.
It says in the title “Win”. Occasionally there are Wins posted here, to remind us we’re not a bunch of sad sacks who can’t make ANY Pinterest I guess?

There seems to be people doing similar things, but making numbers/letters that can stand up in the cake (e.g. http://kojo-designs.com/2012/08/sprinkle-cake-topper/).
I reckon you could probably use a cookie cutter as a mould for some melted chocolate and sprinkles to do it that way too.
Thanks for the tip about the incorrect link Procrastinateher! It’s important to me that the Pinterest Fail links to inspiration content are correct so that proper credit is given for source material. I’ve changed that now. And I hadn’t seen that upright sprinkle cake topper before. It looks like something even I could manage!
If you read the title, it’s listed as a “win”. The new site layout is really busy so it’s easy to miss post titles (I know I’ve had trouble) I wish there was a way to override the page’s theme.
