What I Did: I wanted to bring my friend who recently had a baby something nice. I ended up wasting 3 lemons and a ton of confectioners sugar.

My Result:

Next Time I Will: I added baking soda because I thought it would make it more dense…. Turns out that was an awful decision what with the whole lemon thing.

    Why is your batter brown?

Why didn’t she just follow the recipe? I love to bake from scratch, but for most recipes you have have to follow the instructions carefully. It’s like chemistry class. But not hard at all if you pay attention. This reminds me of my friend who was making a sourdough coffee cake for Easter. But instead of 1/2 tsp. baking soda, she put in 1/2 cup. Obviously it was a disaster, but quite funny.

lemon pie filling and angel food cake mixed and cooked together makes a pretty good lemon cake

I skimmed the instructions, and I’m a bit confused. They don’t mention baking soda anywhere, and the treats look fairly dense on their own… why did you think baking soda (a leavener) would make it more dense?

I made a gluten-free version of these and they were emhegerd so good. Brownies = no leavening except eggs, so even though the recipe looks like it’s missing a few ingredients, don’t add anything else. Baking soda makes things spread (which is why your stuff is flat and tried to crawl out of the pan) and baking powder makes things rise. : )

Sorry yours weren’t lemony delicious. I’m glad the other comments help explain how important it is to follow a recipe the first time you try it, and how successful theirs were to encourage you to try again. I loved them! 🙂

These are one of my husband’s favorite treats (not this version, obv lol). I make them whenever we have a plethora of lemons in the winter.
