What I Did: My friends and I decided to have a fun, crafty night Christmas party. We decided using graham crackers would be much easier than making gingerbread from scratch. The beautiful photo collage from Pinterest made the project look so easy! I even printed out copies of the photos for everyone to follow. We quickly realized it was impossible to cut the crackers and pasteurizing the eggs for the frosting was impossible, so we couldn’t even eat them after we failed!
My Result:
Next Time I Will: I would buy a kit with pre-cut pieces. Or involve children next time so we could at least blame the ugliness on them…
I think gingerbread houses were designed to be anti-Martha Stewart. Don’t sweat so much, these look great! For next time, use melted white candy coating as glue - tastes better and easier to handle.
We made these years ago for a work event. We used regular powdered sugar icing (with a bit more powdered sugar to make it thicker) and they stayed together fairly well. Wouldn’t last a month or so, but were good for the week they were on display.
I like Emily’s candy coating idea, I may have to try that!
I used to make these with my kids, To make it easier we used small milk or juice cartons, and used a stiff icing as the glue. We’d “glue” the crackers to the box to get the house shape, and then decorate. I don’t remember exactly how we did the roof, it’s been a number of years.
we did this growing up, worked every time. But instead of using icing, we used melted sugar to stick the crackers together. just melt sugar in a pot and dip the edges in it, then stuck them together. 🙂
I have made Graham cracker mansions way before interest, you use tub frosting with powdered sugar to make it way thicker, and time to hold pieces in place so they cn set and way more boxes or crqckers the you think you will need because they break when you cut them or actually saw through them
I made these in school as a kid. We also put them up against a milk carton. And the roof was easy to tilt on a stable base. Used basic white icing (store bought). Did the project recently at my daughters preschool Christmas party and it was the same process.
